See For Yourself

Since you have read about them, many of the movies that have been featured on "Coming Soon" posts have had trailers released. I'm not going to lie, I love trailers. Not only watching them, I love what they do. If I were in the PR department of some movie studio charged with cutting a movie trailer, I would think of the ask as the most fun challenge ever. In order to get people hyped for an upcoming film,and also for that film to make money in the box office, the teaser has to reveal enough to get the viewer excited while still holding back enough that will shock them on opening day.

It's A Wonderful Movie

You guessed it. My movie pick for this month is the timeless classic, It's A Wonderful Life. I choose this movie for two reasons. First, I have another one in mind for when Christmas actually roles around. Second, today is Thanksgiving Day and that is really the main theme of the film. A film, that I love by the way.

Butler Did It!

Another shining example of versatility is 44-year-old Gerard Butler. This Scotsman has played in everything from hardcore battle films like Zach Snyder's 300 to romantic comedies like The Ugly Truth. Let's take a quick look at what Mr. Butler is going to serve up in the next few months. See what I did there with his name? I'm pretty clever, no?

Netflix: The Big Tease

I want to take a moment to talk about Netflix. For those of you who don't know what it is, Netflix is a movie and television distributing company that provides a long list of on demand titles to the patron though either their mailbox, or internet connected device. For only eight dollars a month, both current and classic movies can be shipped right to your door OR they can be streamed on your computer, phone, tablet, game console, internet connected DVD or Blu-ray player. It's the "or" with which I have a problem.

This Time Next Year

Let's take a look at what movies we will be looking at around this time next year. All of these movies are either in production of pre-production, so they are still being developed and not in the shooting process yet. Still, there are some exciting prospects for when pumpkin spice everything will be in swing again.

Matthew McConaughey, Anne Hathaway, Micheal Caine and Jessica Chastain will be appearing in a Sci-Fi film called Interstellar directed by Christopher Nolan. I'm pretty excited about this. (Of course, it IS Nolan after all.)

The Best of the Worst

Not only is it the fifth Thursday, but it's HALLOWEEN! which means I have no choice but to delve into my least favorite genre of film. Horror! So, today, we'll be counting down the top 5 horror movies in a post I like to call "The Best of the Worst."

5) The Others (2001): 

Have you ever checked to see if your dead or not? in this movie Nicole Kidman forgot to make sure one way or the other and it makes for some scary goings on. My sister loves this movie and she's not much of a horror movie buff. I have to say it didn't stink that bad.

4) Silent Hill (2006): 

I'll be honest, this one is only on the list because it's one of the only horror movies I've seen. I still don't understand what was going on. I know this is a film adaptation of a video game, but years after seeing it, I can only remember that Sean Bean was in it and there was an awesome execution. A woman was tied to the top of a long post and was slowly lowered down into a fire. it was pretty scary I guess.

October Movie Pick: The Truman Show

Truman Burbank was a average, happy-go-lucky insurance salesman living in the beautiful town of Sea Haven Island. He has lived there his whole life going to school, making friends and getting married. it seemed like a normal life, a blessed life. One day, a tiny thing occurs to him. His entire life is the basis of a television program and he is the star unaware. My movie pick for October is...The Truman Show.

Robin: The Comedian Wonder

So often we see television actors blaze the trails and end up on the silver screen. This week's actor profile subject has gone to the heights of Hollywood fame and has now traveled back to prime time. We remember Robin Williams for such dramas as Good Morning Vietnam, Dead Poets Society and Good Will Hunting. We remember comedies like Aladdin, Mrs. Doubtfire and Jumanji. Older people will remember Mork and Mindy, which was his last Sitcom venture. 30 years of film experience later, Robin is starring in a CBS comedy called, The Crazy Ones.

Apocalypse Movie Now

Now on DVD and Blu-Ray is Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg's end-of-the-world comedy, This Is The End. If I had to describe this movie in one sentence, that sentence would be the following: If you have ever wondered what would happen to a bunch of celebrities during the apocalypse, watching this film will give you a ridiculous if not cleverly scripted look at that scenario. 

2014: The Year of Sequels

Most every year has a few of them, next year is going to be packed with them. In an earlier post, Coming Soon in March 2014, I mentioned that we were going to see a follow-up to 300, Muppets and A Haunted House. {ALLITERATION ALERT} The year has several sequels in store that are sure to satisfy your cinematic side and stimulate the senses.

The first weekend in April, Captain America: Winter Soldier hits theaters. I'm pretty excited about this one even though it takes place in modern day. I don't know, I kind of liked the 1940's aspect of the first movie, but I guess there's no way to go back in time after Marvel's: The Avengers.

September Movie Pick: Life is Beautiful

That was the trailer for this month's Movie Pick. I chose this movie as my favorite for September because, if you have seen it, you know that it forces the viewer to not only laugh, but cry as well. Although I rarely do either of those things, I found myself doing both the first time I watched Roberto Benigni's 1997 drama, Life is Beautiful. I like this particular film because it's really two separate movies in one.
The first movie has a romantic theme and is set in Italy in the late 1930s.

Where There's a Will, There's a Way

I don't know of any other actor working today who has as good a ratio of awesome to un-awesome projects on their resume as Will Smith. From his days on The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air to blockbusters like Independence Day, Men in Black, Enemy of the State, I Am Legend and too many others to name, Smith has proven to be a safe bet for any movie producer when they want talent, humor, poise and did I mention talent? Let's look at what Will has planned for the next few years shall we?

To Rent or Not to Rent?

That IS the question this week as we take a look at what's in the "red box" this week. I'm going to try not to spoil anything about these movies.

Let's start with Star Trek: Into Darkness which was arguably the best movie of the year so far. In writing, casting, editing, directing and every other category that comes to mind. I have to say that Benedict Cumberbatch is just as good a bad guy as he is a good guy. He stars in one of my favorite shows, BBC's Sherlock. Coming Soon in March 2014

Let's take a quick look 6 months down the road at some of the movies that are set to be released in March of next year. I must say, I am pretty excited about most of my Friday nights in that month. 

March 7th: Starting this week you'll be able to see Zach Snyder's sequel to an epic spartan saga. 300: Rise of an Empire will not star Gerard Butler, but will feature a couple cast members from the first chapter including Rodrigo Santoro and David Wenham. You will also see Casino Royale star Eva Green as well as Lena Headey from Game of Thrones.While Snyder did co-develop the screenplay, rookie director Noam Murro will be taking the helm for this movie. Let's hope he has the directing chops to fill theater seats
