This is one of my favorite movies for a lot of reasons. The acting was phenomenal especially that of the main character played by Jim Carrey and also by Ed Harris who played the show's director, Christof. Harris received an Oscar nomination for his role. That was one of 3 Academy Award nominations that the movie received. Peter Wier was recognized for his exemplary directing and Andrew Niccol for the outstanding screenplay. Rightly so, the writing is extremely good at telling the story through layers. (i.e. not spelling it out word for word, but mixing the message throughout different levels of observation)
This is one of Jim Carey's first breaks away from comedy. He nails it. It's evident in moments like so> when he is being told by his childhood best friend, played by Noah Emmerich, that he "would never lie" to him even though lying describes his entire life's work. You wouldn't know it from his films like Ace Ventura: Pet Detective, but Carrey is an amazing dramatic actor as well as a comedic one. He shines in this film in both masks.
The movie plot is very stimulating and suspenseful. It ends with Truman figuring out that his life is a lie and eventually escaping the counterfeit environment in which he has been placed. Clips of viewers are interposed at certain key moments of the movie and it's funny to see the reactions of the audience when you yourself are having the same emotions as you watch Truman yourself. The movie stars those mentioned already along with Laura Linny, Natacha McElhone and Paul Giamatti along with a stunning supporting cast. Seriously, every single extra in the movie, was REALLY convincing. One more thing I'll mention is the music. Burkhard Dallwitz composed some great music for the film and what I particularly liked was that the music that was part of the Truman Show broadcast was synthesized as if it were a soap opera. That was a nice touch.
The Truman Show is on Netflix right now and it's definitely worth your time to go watch it. today.
